Bathory (2008)

Based on the true life serial killer, Elizabeth Báthory.

Plot: Bathory is based on the legends surrounding the life and deeds of Countess Elizabeth Bathory known as the greatest murderess in the history of mankind. Contrary to popular belief, Elizabeth Bathory was a modern Renaissance woman who ultimately fell victim to men’s aspirations for power and wealth.

Review: Bathory is not quite a horror movie at all but more of a historical documentary on the most notorious countess of all time. Her crimes were indeed horrific.

Most people know how she bathed in the blood of virgins in the hopes for eternal youth but many don’t know the complete story behind it and what a psychopath she was. Elizabeth Bathory has been labelled by Guinness World Records as the most prolific female murderer.

So, if you are tired of the standard serial killer story and want something with more depth and not constant gore then this is perfect lazy weekend viewing.

FYI: Cradle of Filth’s Cruelty and the Beast is a concept album about Bathory and poetically puts her life and times into a furious yet melodic aural assault. She also inspired Slayer in the song Beauty Through Order from the album World Painted Blood.

Genre: crime, gothic horror, torture, serial killer

Rating: 3 Hammer Smashed Faces out of 5
