The People Under the Stairs (1991)

The People Under the Stairs

Plot: Two adults and a juvenile burglar break into a house occupied by a brother and sister and their stolen children and can’t escape.

Review: The People Under the Stairs is one of those forgotten gems. It is such a good movie and should be rewatched.

I love the Mum and Dad characters. They are one of those crazy religious couples and very well played by Wendy Robie and Everett McGill. Wes Craven always had a good eye for casting the right actors.

I also love the old gothic house and the storyline will take you on a wild roller-coaster ride. Get ready for chases, tense and disturbing moments and even pretty funny ones!

The make-up was well done and the special effects weren’t cheesy. There weren’t that many gory scenes, so people with weak stomachs can enjoy it.

It is just a well put together horror flick. As for who are the people under the stairs? Well, you will have to watch the movie to find out ;)

FYI: Wes Craven was inspired to write this film after reading a real-life news story about burglars breaking into a house. When authorities arrived, the burglars had disappeared but they discovered locked doors with noises coming from behind. Children had been locked up inside the rooms by their parents, never allowed to go outside.

Genre: torture, disturbing, cannibal, gothic horror

Rating: 4 Hammer Smashed Faces out of 5
